Where to Stay Around Loch Lomond
Balloch and the South End
Balloch sits at the south-west end of the loch, where the River Leven runs out towards the Clyde. Loch Lomond Shores has boat trips, cafes, and a SEA LIFE aquarium, and Balloch Country Park is right next door. It's the easiest entry point for anyone driving up from Glasgow, a little under 30 minutes by car on the A82. Alexandria is a short drive south and makes a quieter base with the same access to the loch and the pubs around the area.
Drymen and the East Side
The east side of the loch has Drymen as its main village, with Balmaha right on the shore. The West Highland Way passes through Drymen on its way north, and Conic Hill rises above Balmaha, with boats to Inchcailloch from the pier. This side suits walkers and slower days. Glengoyne Distillery is about 15 minutes south if whisky is on the list, and Glasgow is under an hour away.
Aberfoyle and the Trossachs
The Trossachs side of the national park is where the hills fold in around lochs and woodland. Aberfoyle is the main village, with a forest visitor centre, Go Ape nearby, and the Duke's Pass running up into the hills. Loch Ard and Loch Katrine are a short drive away, with walking, kayaking, and the SS Sir Walter Scott steamship on Katrine. Gartmore sits just south in quieter countryside. This is a good base for anyone after woodland rather than lochside.
Cowal and Loch Long
The Argyll side sits west of Loch Lomond proper, where sea lochs cut into steep hillsides. Blairmore sits on Loch Long, and Kilcreggan on the Rosneath peninsula. Both are quieter coastal bases, with easy access to piers, shoreline walks, and views across the water to the hills opposite. The drive in takes longer than the south or east side, but the area is much quieter. Benmore Botanic Garden sits further south, with one of the country's largest redwood avenues at the entrance. Good for anyone wanting coastal quiet rather than the busier Loch Lomond side.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the best time to visit Loch Lomond?
+
Loch Lomond is stunning year-round. Summer (June-August) offers the warmest weather and longest days, perfect for hiking Ben Lomond or exploring the loch by boat. Autumn brings spectacular foliage colours across the Trossachs. Winter is magical for cosy lodge breaks with hot tubs under crisp Scottish skies. Spring sees fewer crowds and the landscape coming alive with wildflowers.
What is there to do around Loch Lomond?
+
Plenty. You can climb Ben Lomond, cruise the loch, visit Glengoyne Distillery, wander around Luss or Balmaha, try watersports at Loch Lomond Shores, or head back to your hot tub after a day out. Glasgow is about 30 minutes from the south end of the loch, handy for a day trip.
What's included in a self-catering lodge break?
+
Each lodge is self-catering, with a well-equipped private kitchen, living space, and bedrooms for your group. Wi-Fi, smart TV, and on-site parking come as standard. Individual listings show the full details, along with extras like wood burners, hot tubs, gardens, and BBQ areas.
Do Loch Lomond lodges have Wi-Fi and parking?
+
Yes. Every property on the site includes Wi-Fi and on-site parking. Parking type (private, off-road, or driveway) and space count vary by property, so each listing has the specifics. Most lodges sit in quieter locations away from main roads.
What should dog owners check before booking?
+
Look for the pet-friendly filter when browsing, as not every property accepts dogs. For properties that do, check the maximum number of dogs allowed, whether the garden is enclosed, and any house rules on where dogs can sleep or settle indoors. The area itself is excellent for dogs, with plenty of walks, dog-friendly pubs, and open countryside nearby.
